Don't read more into my post than necessary. When I refer to the dark side, I am referring to the perception that non-Linux people have about Linux people...until they become one. Having been in Linux and Open Source professionally (meaning I get paid for my work there) since 1999, I too have a great deal of friends on both sides of the issue, and the non-Linux / Open Source people call our side the "Dark Side."
Anyway, I enjoyed reading your posting, thought it was way off. Dave On 5/27/07, Pablo Manalastas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

I have always thought that when Linux people refer to the Dark Side (in this list, in Mapalad, and in other techie lists), they were referring to Microsoft. I believe that you are the first one to refer to Linux as the Dark Side. In fact, Linux is the Bright side, the Illumined side, the Enlightened side, the one that shows the Source, the one that allows for Understanding, the one that does not hide dark secrets -- the Bright side. The first time I heard the use of the Dark side to refer to Microsoft is when Bill Gates visited the Philippines many years ago on the occasion of the launch of some Microsoft OS release. During the open forum, my big boss (Arnie del Rosario) wanted to ask Gates if it is true that he was the "anti-Cxxxxx". This was meant to be a joke, of course. So if Bill Gates is the anti-Cxxxxx then Microsoft is the Dark side. Also, Windows (95,98,Me,NT,2000,XP,Vista) hides so many dark secrets that the choice of the term "Dark" side seems to be most appropriate. P~Manalastas P.S. Apologies to Ritchie Lozada and all our good friends from Microsoft Philippines, who have always been so supportive of Ateneo de Manila. By the way, Ritchie Lozada was our top Linux guru/nerd/hacker before ha became Microsoft's Web business manager. _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List [email protected] (#PLUG @ irc.free.net.ph) Read the Guidelines: http://linux.org.ph/lists Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
