Hello All! Not exactly Linux-related, but...just wanted to ask, how many hosts should one have on a single subnet before network broadcasts become a problem?
We'll be expanding our local lan pretty soon, and we're trying to decide on which approach to implement: 1.) use multiple subnets(with 252 hosts each) with layer 3 switches and routers, or 2.) use a single subnet with 64k hosts. the problem i have with the first approach is that in the long run, the network layout could get real complex. on the other hand, if we could use a single subnet with 64k hosts(migration issues notwithstanding)...even if we use up 1k addresses annually, that should last us until 2070! and the resulting layout would be much simpler. Our typical applications are: windows file sharing, email, IRC. tia ____________________________________________________________________________________ Don't get soaked.
