This is another battle between perceptions, just look -- Google technology using open source technology is b*tch slapping proprietary systems everywhere but do you see Google even handing out it's search engine appliances? No. Why? For technological edge.
Fooler gave a good reply to the original post (and the only who remembered this _is_ a technical discussion list), he showed that there _is_ a FOSS solution for HA/Clustering but I admit its out dated -- however it doesn't mean it you can't improve and update it yourself. It doesn't mean that a company who has a competent technology team hasn't developed a version of it for high production standards comparable to SUN, HP and MS clustering solutions. But when you are working in a technology industry, why give out that competitive edge prematurely and FOSS licenses doesn't require you to distribute any enhancements you make anyway. The business model now is pickup FOSS project, enhance it, use it, leverage on it, and keep it secret. If your conscience bothers you then donate or join a FOSS mailing list and give out free advices. Therefore the argument that on specialized scope/domain such as HA/Clustering proprietary systems still rules is a matter of perception. If we even further argue that if everyone is keeping theirs a secret, then MS, HP and SUN does rule the HA/Clustering domain because they are the only ones providing it anyway then its still a matter of perception. You can buy what they sell or go int R&D, invest on people and make your own. In comparison, its like a person who buys hi-tech gadgets so other people will think their technologically savvy compared to a person who teaches himself to build his own gadgets for personal fulfillment but shuts up. Now which one is your perception? Just my 2 cents worth. >On 10/2/07, Rogelio Serrano <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > >On 10/2/07, Orlando Andico <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > -- -- Roger P.
