The U.S. patent situation is a mess, and much of that is because of the
oxymoron known as software patents. Now a group led by Ben Klemens, author
of "Math You Can't Use: Patents, Copyright, and Software", wants to clean
things up by getting rid of software patents altogether. The End Software
Patents (ESP) coalition, plans to embark on a long legal campaign, as
reported by Bruce Byfield in "Software patent abolition campaign will
launch next month":
The campaign currently has seed funding of a quarter million
dollars from sources those associated with the group won't
disclose, and hopes to augment that with donations from
individuals and companies for a struggle that, to judge by
the usual amount of time it takes to push major changes
through the US Supreme Court, could take five years or more
to complete.
