I don't know about you guys, but personally I gain zero geek pride from working on open-source projects.
I used to have a couple of projects like a DECADE ago and back then I was brimming full of pride at bug reports and code fixes and mention on web sites.... but that is so loser-ish :-P Make no mistake, I still hack. I hack boats. I hack camera lenses. I hack flashes to add functionality to them. I hack cameras (well, i blew up my EOS 350D from hacking it.. oh well) All of which are far more fun than contributing to an open-source project.
