thanks for the explanations migz and doc pabz.

apparently, the cpu scaling is causing me the problem. when set to
'performance' or 2.4ghz, utils like cp & rsync works perfectly. but if
setting's like ondemand or powersave, etc. the resulting output file
is always corrupted. dd most of the time works, but not always.

im on ubuntu hardy 8.04, with p4-clockmod driver. im now actually
thinking of deactivating cpu scaling on this machine (isa pa, parang
lag kahit naka ondemand sya).
