SELinux is great. It's just that it's too complex to account for all
possible situations and permissions. I guess that's why people turn it off
by default.  My take on the matter is that it's easier to set for servers,
but a lot more complex for desktop users. I'd turn it on for simple web and
file servers, but off for desktops (specially the ones which are not
primarily for my use).
