Currently, I'm playing around with a Seagate Dockstar as a home file server. It is an OEM'd sheeva plug computer running Ubuntu for the ARM. It has 4 USB ports and an ethernet port. Out of the box, it needs an Internet connection to connect to pogoplug.com, but there are writeups out there that allows you to set it up without the need to connect to the Internet.
I thought about getting an atom-based CPU before. Compared to one a plug computer requires less power (<5W I believe). The caveat is that a plug computer relies on passive cooling so you have to place it in a well ventilated area. --- mike t. ----- Original Message ---- > From: th3g33k <[email protected]> > To: Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Technical Discussion List ><[email protected]> > Sent: Friday, August 20, 2010 18:34:51 > Subject: [plug] Intel ATOM Mobo + Linux > > I need to setup a home server that would run 24/7 and my requirement > is that it should be power efficient and takes up not a lot of space. > I was thinking of using a Atom CPU on a mini-ITX form factor mother > board. > > I was just wondering if anyone from this list has tried installing > Linux on this kind of architecture and where could I locally find this > fine piece of hardware.
