Dear PLUG, I'm very happy to announce the following enhancements to www.linux.org.ph.
Feeds Now Working Great - The site is subscribed to the following gentlemen's feeds with their blessings: Chin Wong, Ron Artos, Ag Alcantara, Aneurin Diaz, r3d3ye, myself, Noel Bautista, Manny Amador and Mr. Ian Dexter. Every 3 hours the site searches these member's blogs for posts that fall under the category 'open source' (or equivalent, varies). The titles of these are then posted on the front page of the site linked directly to the post themselves. The future: Clearly we are looking for more local tech bloggers who are developers, businessmen, etc. who write about open source. Email me if you'd like to join your blog. Company or organisation blogs are also welcome. Merely adopt the practice of properly tagging your content as 'open source', 'linux', or whichever is applicable and submit your rss feed. Your content must be original. Applications and Distributions - The site now lists locally developed applications (http://www.linux.org.ph/apps) and linux distributions (http://www.linux.org.ph/distros). Again these features help spotlight efforts by different groups around the country who contribute open source projects. Personally, I had no idea a lot of these were even in existence. As such I am enlightened and am the better for it, and am confident others will equally appreciate it. The press will find this very useful as it helps them research local software development stories, let alone the fact they are open source. The future: The current Application and Distribution entries are borne from the tireless efforts of our Mr. John Lee, who compiled them himself. We are sure there are a lot more however. Please feel free to contact him ([email protected]) and he will be more than accommodating. Events - The site now also lists events. These are classified as Installfest, Hackfest, Launch, Meetup, Party and Other. Clearly, if there's some public open source related event going on, we want it mentioned on our calendar. The only limitation is that the event should not be sponsored by parties in contrast with the ideals of open source. Everything else, especially the community, student and org - driven ones, are welcome. The future: Our goal here is help event organizers find sponsors and gain traffic. All event organizers need to do is state their case, create a poster and mention they are looking for sponsors. The site will help connect them with these. To Conclude: All these measures aim to make the site the authoritative resource for news, opinion and data concerning open source from a local perspective. In summary, if it's Open Source and it concerns the Philippines, we want it on www.linux.org.ph. Thank you to Meric, Eric, Agi, Ian, John and Mr. HardWyrd for their tireless contributions.
