VPNs provide an end to end encrypted tunnel. For it to be secure, both
points must be locked down. But if your Internet transaction goes beyond
the VPN, that part of the session is not secure.
Laptop ---Tunnel---> VPN Server
(secure even for unencrypted transactions)
Laptop ---Tunnel---> VPN Server ---> The Internet
(secure) (not secure for unencrypted
transactions)
