samakv, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit on my Intel Atom, with
Gnome Classic... however, it's got 2GB RAM. I think you can find more
RAM for your PC if you scour through Gilmore computer shops in QC
(http://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=14.613481&lon=121.034872&z=20&m=h).

Adding more RAM is very important, as well as an SSD drive for the
operating system. I put it another 1TB laptop disk drive for more
storage, as my SSD is only 40GB for the O/S.

With my less powerful Atom (than your Pentium Core Duo;
http://www.Intel.com/pressroom/kits/quickreffam.htm), I use it as an
nmap scanner while watching mkv|avi|mp4 movies or documentaries. I
also use it to monitor the Waze route of my loved ones, use Chrome to
browse the web or read e-mail. My CPU sucks at playing Flash videos on
YouTube though.

Audio playback is adequate as I connected it to an ancient Bose
Lifestyle with 5.1 speakers system, and video on an almost as old
Panasonic plasma 42-inch monitor. The performance is positively
surprising for such a humble computer.

Using OpenOffice, LibreOffice or Lotus Symphony apps on it isn't so
great though. I write reports with lots of screenshots and formatted
text, typically 100+ pages long. If I go past 15 pages, then it
crawls... I think your Pentium Code Duo may do better, but I'm not
going to expect much more.

It also is terrible if you're going to put a DB on it, even if you've
got an SSD for storage. As an example, Metasploit with PostgreSQL
takes me a while to load up, and also when going through it's modules
and stuff.

Anyway, I think you'll be just fine with your Pentium Core Duo for the
most basic expectations.

P.S.
Wanna try Steam for Linux client for your current setup? ;)
