Hi. I ran the following:
pigz -9 -c 500GB.file > 500GB.file.gz For the first 20% of the file pigz was zipping along at a good 6GB/min then performance slowed down and fluctuates between 1GB/min and 3GB/min. When I looked at htop, I observed that the cpu is not being saturated by pigz for long periods of time: pigz cycles between short bursts where the cpus are saturated and periods when it's like running at 20% of cpu. has anybody encountered this before? This is actually how I backup all my VMs during the weekends when the servers are "shut down" so I don't notice if this is a sotck behavior of pigz. It just so happens that I needed to do a backup of a really big file today and noticed this odd behavior. BTW, the server where this is running also have a few KVM VMs running. CPU is an Intel Xeon 6-core CPU (4 threads per core) and 128GB RAM. --- mike t.
