Huh, that does seem to point toward a cabling problem, but are there any
other messages (that don't have the string "error" in them) before or
after those specific instances?

Well, not exactly. The files were probably orphaned during the crash.
fsck found them and didn't know what to do with them, so it stuck them
under that directory for you to review at your leisure.
