More cluelessness...

Ubuntu. Intrepid. I'm trying to connect to remote machines (See the
thread "Remote Desktop under Ubuntu"). I'm doing this so I can work in
the comfort of my family room, in the relaxing atmosphere of screaming
kids who need to be intensively nagged to get their homework done,
instead of the high-stress environment of a quiet office with dogs
sleeping on my feet and classical music playing in the background.

I can't even ping the other Ubuntu machines on the network?!? We're all
one happy family on this side of the firewall, so I assume the problem
is one of setting up the right permissions.

Here's what happens: I'm at thishere, and I know that thatthere is on
and on the network.
I do "ping thatthere" and I get told "unknown host thatthere". I do
"ping thishere" and I get a happy (and fast!) response.

TIA
