tony/Joe:

Yes, one would think this would work, but it's not playing nicely.

There's no built-in Ethernet on this Tecra 8000, so I put in a PCMCIA
adapter card and wired that to the router. The link and full duplex lights
on the adapter light up.

In /etc/network I edited the interfaces file so eth0 has a static IP
address, netmask, and gateway address; only eth0 is listed as 'auto'.
Unfortunately, when I run '/etc/init.d/networking start' that interface
fails to come up. It's not recognized.

Something in the distribution upgrade really torqued this system. The
wired/static connection ought to be seen and that interface should be
recognized and made visible, but that's not happening. Sigh.
