   Huh! I run Slackware and can use the RCA-plugged speakers or the USB
headset.

   How kewel! There are so many entry points (audacity, alsamixer, etc.) that
the most parsimonious search term skipped right past me. My IT (Innovative
Technologies) is on sale at Fred Meyers for $60; that's 2/3 the price of a
low-end ION. And it does come with a winduhs version of audacity which the
above page is a good indication it will work with linux.
