You say it worked before and now it doesn't? In that scenario, 1st 
question I
ask myself is what changed.

I found this thread that talks about how sometimes the rdiff-backup-data 
directory can become corrupt due to a failed run. The author provides a 
script that checks for a valid increment before attempting a backup.
