I use my Droid phone for this. Enable wired tethering on the phone. Plug the USB cable into the laptop or desktop. Network-manager recognizes the device and sets up a network connection. I only use this occasionally for laptop access away from home or when my DSL connection disappears at home, not for permanent access. Speeds are quite acceptable and way better than dialup when you have a good signal.
