Google Summer of Code is taking applications for 2011, and the Scribus development team are actively seeking student applications. Students will be mentored by one of the experienced Scribus developers. The program is three months long and students will receive a stipend of US$5,000, with another $500 to the mentoring organization.
Last summer Scribus mentored three students, resulting in development of several new features, an excellent educational opportunity for beginning programmers, and a general win for everyone. Of course, if you're not excited about Scribus there are many other open source projects that will be mentoring students. Last year the total was in the neighborhood of 3,000 students, so whatever open source project you're interested in, you may find an opportunity to participate.
