Yup, that's the start of my approach. I then proceeded to chown -R 1000.1000 on my home directory. If you have other regular user owned files, I suppose some sort of find exec command combo would take care of that. As for GRUB, your description is why I found it simpler to stick with GRUB 0.97 (what's on RHEL 6, and what I think is still the default for Fedora).
