If at least one of the old or new drives is WD or Seagate you can download free software from the respective manufacturer to do disk cloning (and backups as well as many other drive-related tasks). They are OEM-ified Acronis True Image. I've had no trouble using either package, including cloning an old drive to a partition sized to my liking on the new drive.
