It sorta reminds me of the history of how Linus got started, based on
his discussions with Andy Tannebaum. But as strongly as they disagreed
w/r/t the right kind of kernel, their disagreements were on topic for
Linux/Unix. 

Today, Linus is known as a "benevolent dictator" w/r/t Linux
development. Thus, I would not object to a list where there is a
"benevolent dictator"(s) who can gently keep us nudged back onto topic.
But as such, that benevolent dictator needs the authority to enforce
community standards. 

And in our free marketplace of ideas, there's always another group
available for that rare user who might get knocked off here or there.
And there's always another chance for such users to find some maturity.

In fact, this group is the most "hands-off" group that I've seen w/r/t
moderation. I know the Ubuntu lists have some more well defined and
enforced community standards. (ref
