It sounds like a read only mask is set for the automount. Here in the Fedora guide http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Administration_Guide_Draft#Using_Automount it mentions a file /etc/auto.master and a configurable /misc file pointing to /etc/auto.misc /etc/auto.misc contains the default mounting options for various file systems.
