I was trying to describe the concept you call DHCP reservation. The idea being that all IP addresses are assigned to each device by the router, but some devices are given a permanent IP address based on their MAC address. I still think the WRT54G likely has the DHCP reservation capability. If it does not, the Tomato firmware or any of the other open source firmwares for the router do have it. (Provided this particular WRT54G supports alternative firmware).
