launchd is not nearly as opaque as the Windows Registry. It's not System-V, true, but it's reasonably well documented and the plist files are easily understood.

The launchctl command works in a manner similar to systemctl command found on Fedora and other bleeding-edge Linux distributions.

A startup system that can track dependencies and do parallel starts is the way Linux heading, so getting a handle on Mac's launchd system will get your mindset ready for Linux' future.
