Long story. I'll try to give the short version.

In trying to get rid of the noise coming from the fan I followed some
directions I found on the web. That involved removing the fan from the
heat sink, peeling back the cover from the fan bearing, administering a
tiny bit of 3-in-1 oil, and reversing the removal process. The last step
was to plug the fan connector back into the board. I noticed a small,
black piece of plastic. Turns out it was one of the fan blades. Sigh.

Went to ENU and got an EVGA GeForce 210. The board looks nearly
identical to my old GS 8400. Specs show that it has 1GB memory instead
of the 512 MB on the old board.

Put the new board in the machine. It booted up with the same problem --
initial Ubuntu splash screen on the DVI monitor, screen goes blank --
VGA monitor comes up with the image shifted to the left. Drag the image
back to the right, log in. So, I'm back to where I was before busting
the fan on the old board.

Following your recommendation I removed the nVidia current driver,
powered down, powered back up. With the driver gone both monitors come
up with the same image. Reinstalled the nVidia current driver. (I
removed and re installed the driver using the Ubuntu Software Center.)

Ran sudo usr/bin/nvidia-settings. The XServer Display Configuration
Layout shows the left monitor resolution (1280x1024). The right monitor
is shown as Samsung SyncMaster (Off). When I click on it the Resolution
drop-down shows Off. I can change it to 1680x1050, and it changes in the
Layout display, but the monitor remains off. I click on Apply, the left
monitor goes blank for a second or so, and then comes back. The right
monitor remains off.

I just noticed (as I'm typing this) that the Position drop-down shows
Absolute followed by +1280+0. I changed it to Right of, clicked Apply,
and the right monitor reappeared. Then I returned it to Absolute,
clicked apply, still have the wallpaper as expected, and the box to the
right of the Position drop-down again filled in with +1280+0.

Yes.

Done.

Yes. Both screens are set for Absolute. The left one has an offset of
+0+0, and the right one +1280+0, which makes sense.

I don't see Viewport Out on my settings window.

Yes. The left screen is 1280x1024, and the right one is 1680x1050.

The left one, which is what I want.

Now that I'm going through it again I see that TwinView is what I had
before. Not sure why I thought I was using Separate X screens.

I saved this e-mail as a draft, did a restart, and everything is back to
normal -- no more blank right hand screen and the image shifted to the
left on the left hand screen.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be saving a copy of this e-mail in my
machine log, just in case something like this happens again.
