Thank you for your help ... the Acer problem resolved when the box died, and was retruned to the retailer.
I got an HP Privilion (W8 again) and faced the same problem, but I applies some things you suggested and found the final answer here ... <http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03659945&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=5360082&tmp_track_link=ot_search> ... wherein it is (sort of) explained how to get the CD/DVD to boot. I say sort of because it isn't a perfect world, eh? But we got there, and that is the main point.
