Folks, Our plant fibre rings use Hirschmann switches, Hirschmann has a tool to view the devices and other devices, it allows one to see each piece of the network, and if the devices have SNMP enabled it will show many of the device attributes if they are part of what SNMP can view.
The software is about 7 years old, I have called them to find out about a update, they really do not know, some say that the old license should allow for a update to the present code level others do not. A new license is $1500.00 + I am trying to figure out if there is a good FOSS solution for SNMP monitoring, One of the neat things about the Hirschmann sofware is it will draw a diagram of the network based on what it detects from each device, then I can go in and move things around on the map and add documentation to them. If there is a issue that particular device or segment will change colour and also give a alarm as to what the con- dition is, having that diagram on a large screen helps catch issues that may not be apparent as they come and go too fast for more to be de- tected. Oh the Hirschmann product does run on Linux and does so very well. But I would like to look at FOSS solutions, particularly given that the Hirschmann people do not know WHAT I need to do either way, either buy a new license or get the old one to work. Any ideas or recommendations out there? -- Chuck Hast -- KP4DJT -- Glass, five thousand years of history and getting better.
