Is there an external unit that will allow my Slackware running laptop to access the 'Net via my account with Verizon Wireless?

Have you looked at mobile hotspots from Verizon?

I have the 5510L. Works great for my needs.

Google "verizon mifi" (note the 'm').

You can get pre-paid units from, e.g, Fry's. You can get non-contract monthly rates from Verizon (pricy, but no contract).

We have a "Jetpack" on hand at work. If someone needs digital access but is going to be in a place with spotty wi-fi, we just activate it for a month. It's been a while since we've done so, but I seem to recall it being about $50 (with a data cap).
