It shouldn't and I have not seen that. This behavior would suggest a 
hardware issue that is outside of FreeNAS' reach.

'zpool list' to see if your desired pool is closer to 4TB rather than 
8Tb. 'zpool status' to see the pool topology (stripe, mirror, RaidZ...)

You definitely want to avoid some greens. They have "green" firmware 
that puts them to sleep, convincing ZFS that the drive has failed. Reds 
are good but not great.
