if so, your assessment is correct, it is only meant to route emails to some
other smtp server.

I use a similar package on debian called ssmtp ("simple smtp") and just
have it pointed to the incoming smtp server that hosts my own domain email
(gmail in this case) so it can only actually send anything to a domain
recognized by that server. that way it would be much more difficult for it
to be abused for spam. you could probably do the same with porkbun if you
felt so inclined.
