RIP. I liked Michael. We met at a couple PLUG meetings, but mostly we corresponded via e-mail. I think he was the first person who worked for a huge corporation (US Bank) with whom I ever discussed IT issues. I was working for OGI at the time, and I remember being startled to find that someone might be a member of an entire group whose main responsibility (at that time) was DHCP and DNS. I mean, we just kept those records in version control and updated them as necessary; it was a tiny part of our job. It dawned on me that I knew very little about IT in the larger world.

I just started pawing through my PLUG mailing list archive, which starts circa 2000, and the first message I have from him is from his work email at Columbia Funds, and it's a reply to Paul. I don't think he moved to US Bank for a few years after that. The last email in my archive from him with columbiafunds.com domain is September 2002.

I think the last time I talked to him in person was when I broke his network at 6:30 in the morning during a firmware upgrade, just this last November. I drove down to his house to fix it.
