Thermal paste does not last forever, it can dry out and cause temperature problems. Get some new stuff, some isopropyl alcohol, some swabs, clean that old stuff off and replace it. I was having heat and shutdown problems with an Intel Skullcandy i7 NUC, the thermal paste was petrified. That helped some but the real culprit was the turbo setting in the BIOS.
