alpine user on this maillist and ask for pointers, suggestions, and
clue sticks on how to set up an automatic responder (which should
piss off the spammers who get through as well as inform legitimate

You can use procmail for this. Grep for "vacation" in the
procmailex(5) man page. A file-based version of that recipe can be
found in several places, e.g.,
