I'm not sure about other distros but Slackware will still ask for a root
passsword in single user mode.
You might want to do this although I haven't tried it with shadow passwords:
1. create an encrypted password on another system and copy it from
/etc/passwd or /etc/shadow OR if you have an account on the system you want
root access on, go to 4b.
2. boot the computer using a boot disk
3. mount the partition containing /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow
4a. copy the encrypted password to root's entry on /etc/passwd or
/etc/shadow
4b. copy the encrypted password of your accound to root's
5. reboot
