Use OpenSSH.  I believe there's something called SFTP, and if you don't
like that, you can trick SSH into transferring files and directories by
tarring the file or directory to standard output of your secure shell and
then redirect the standard output of ssh to an untar, e.g. 

ssh -E tar cvf - dir-to-xfer | tar xvf -
