I've never setup ALSA, but maybe you'd like to check if you have
appropriate kernel sources (for whatever kernel version you are running)
in /usr/src/linux/. Also, are ready-made RPMs not available for ALSA?
These are normally easier to handle than building your own.
<http://www.rpmfind.net/> is a great database of RPMs for various
RPM-based distributions (take note: sometimes there are differences
between distributions that mean you can't safely use their RPMs if you're
not using their distro. Organization of files and naming of packages
[hence dependencies] are possible issues.).
