though my preference is emacs and its progeny, it would be an important
"skill" to know how to use vi since some *n*x installations only have vi
available. the vi syntax is also useful when learning to use ed/ex in
scripts. of course, the whole point is enabling the student to use a whole
plethora of tools which is part of the Unix Philosophy(tm) and IMO is a
Good Thing(tm).
