i think the question should be, "Don't they have anything better to do?
Cracking and stealing is old. Why don't they write something interesting
for a change?"
i've met more creative, if not more intelligent, young filipino hackers
and they don't get the same media mileage our "hacker" goons and thugs
have.
it's not that difficult to come up with N ways to crack, break, steal
especially with all those "sploits" floating around the net. so breaking
into systems, stealing unwary users credit card numbers (cc in crack
talk), ping flooding, DoSing, etc, etc isn't impressive at all.
it takes more brain cells to come up with something original.
as for his stolen goodies, his high tech "GTA" 'puter, it isn't worth crap
because without it or any 'puter, he wouldn't be able to program himself
out of a paper bag.
and finally, just to answer your question, "No. I am not proud of such
louts. I am ashamed that hoodlums like that get identified with Filipinos.
Criminals are _criminals_ whether they are high-tech, graceful, handsome,
artsy, intelligent, sexy, <insert some laudable characteristic or
attribute here>. They do not deserve our praise."
what i'd like to see though is some kind of effort to "re-orient" that
kind of "talent" into serious creation of work that we might be proud of.
how to do it is anyone's ballgame at the moment.
