Hey all,

I'm posting this problem in case any of you have done something like this.

We have a certain device that logs to a MSSQL server running on WinNT. I
*think* it does this by going thru ODBC (I'm no database expert so excuse
the ignorance). What I want to do is create the same database on either
PostgreSQL or MySQL running on Linux. Ultimately, I want to eliminate any
MS product on our servers (high priced licenses, security concerns, etc.).
For now though I need to be able to sort of replicate the log data such that
it is sent to both MSSQL and the SQL running on Linux. Bale the device
sends its log data to the WinNT machine, and from there it goes to both
MSSQL (via ODBC?) and MySQL (for example). Can anyone suggest a method of
doing this? Could I just yank MSSQL out and put MySQL in its place assuming
i create the same database in it with the same tables and all?

I have asked the device vendor to look into this issue. Unfortunately, it's
been almost 2 months without a word from them and I've decided to take
action. They seem to be bent on making us use WinNT 4 with MSSQL 7.1 (I
hate applying SPs).
