I think that many of us have got some significant projects or at the
very least have contributed patches/fixes to existing free software
projects at some time or another...

As for me, I have a small project on Sourceforge which is an XML-based
literate programming system (http://xml-lit.sourceforge.net/), several
cryptographic Perl modules on CPAN (Crypt::Rijndael, Digest::SHA256,
and Digest::Tiger), and contributed the AES and Serpent code used in
lsh (the GNU ssh). Also contributed to the PalmOS calculator EasyCalc
(stopped now that my Palm has disappeared...grrr).

All over the world, the vast majority of free software is developed by
volunteers working out of their spare time; only a little is actually
developed by full-time programmers who work for open source companies.
Why do you want to know, by the way? Have you got a project you want
to see? Explain it, maybe it'll capture the imagination of someone on
the list who'll wind up doing it.

And by the way, your question is not OT...it's very much on topic!
