I just arrived last night from Singapore. HP just laid off
thousands of employees world-wide, and at HP-Singapore and HP-Manila
some people I know personally got laid off. The cost-cutting action
came as a surprise. Nobody knew (not even the bosses) what was coming.
One Friday afternoon, people were just told that they have been laid
off, and on the same day, they got their walking papers. Of course
the usual separation benefits were made available, but the the surprise
action is totally unFilipino. With the HP-Compaq merger, a few
thousands more from HP Singapore will be laid off. This economic
downturn is bad for everyone, and we need all the help we can get
during these bad times.
