I haven't tried, but most Linux distributions probably ship versions of
PPP that can handle MS-CHAP authentication. Why don't you give it a shot
and see? You can't skip on editing the /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file, though.
For PAP you'd have to edit /etc/ppp/pap-secrets, anyway.
