The newsalert is not the original source - they got it from Newsbytes, which in turn is fed by Metropolitan Computer Times as their Philippine content provider. Normally one could easily just chalk it up to the MCT reporters' bad writing (i.e. the article mentions fighter jets as being under the US State Department. Heavens to Betsy Ross, it's the Department of Defense, silly.) but in this story, the Synergy 2001 event is covered by all sorts of media, including Businessworld (which ran a much better written story on the same Linux project for Lockheed-Martin). see: http://www.itmatters.com.ph/news/news_11192001b.html ------- MANILA, PHILIPPINES | Monday, November 19, 2001 RP Linux programmers develop applications for US Defense supplier By Eleanore C. Sanchez, Reporter Hoax or not?? I think that: a) The event obviously happened. SuSE Philippines programmers did speak. HP and Intel would not invite charlatans to their event. b) The project (linux development for defense work) is a little too sensitive to be talked about without security clearance c) SuSE and Lockheed flew into action to clamp down on the story which leaked out to the world at large through the Internet. d) The Terpin group is SuSE's PR group in the USA - they sent a blanket denial to Linux Today. e) When I asked for confirmation they denied again. "I will have to answer in the negative" replied Miz Xenia of Terpin. Even after I pointed out past articles featuring SuSE Phil's Raul Ocampo appearing in INQ7's Linux Links column by Dominique Cimafranca (see http://www.inq7.net/inf/2001/oct/08/inf_linuxlinks-1.htm) - the reply was "I will contact Dominque to correct him" (what? his article has nothing to do with Lockheed Martin) f) Raul Ocampo is no flash in the pan, he is active in PLUG where he is identified as working with SuSE Linux. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions... as for me, I smell a big cover-up :-) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- jim ayson / [EMAIL PROTECTED] / www.philmusic.com --- End forwarded message --- _ Philippine Linux Users Group.
