Hi Walter

Since you are having problems with the VGA card, you might want to skip the 
configuration of X WIndows during the
installation. You can easily configure it later once the system is  installed and you 
are already at the root prompt.
There is an option to skip the X config in MDK 8.1.

BTW, regarding your question on how to insert the "non-fb" parameter on lilo.conf... 
the parameter is on the default
lilo.conf that MDK 8.1 installs. All you gotta do is choose that kernel to boot on. 
Once you see the "Welcome to
Linux" page, press Esc key. The familiar "boot:" prompt appears. Type in linux-nonfb 
to choose no frame buffers.
