Open Source featured at Cordillera IT Congress
Attendees to the Cordillera IT Congress (CITCON) were treated to something
very few of them had ever heard before: a comprehensive introduction to
open source software and the most successful open source package: Linux.
Held from February 20-22, the congress organizers invited speakers from
the Distributed Development Network (DDN), a new Philippine company that
deals exclusively with open source software. The DDN speakers, Emmanuel
Amador and Victor Serafica, introduced the open source concept, business
models, applications, and showed off Red Hat Linux 7.2 running the Ximian
GNOME graphical desktop.
"Although many internet-savvy people in Baguio had heard about Linux and Open
Source his was the first time that they were given an in-depth discussion
about Open Source," Serafica said. "They just couldn't believe that they
had heard were all true, but they eventually were convinced."
"By explaining how Open Source can affect the peoples of Baguio and
Cordillera, we were able to send a very concrete message to the
participants that they will benefit most from this development
model," Amador added.
The success of the Open Source sessions, and requests for Linux training
seminars led to the announcement of a planned Linux Boot Camp to be held
in the City of Baguio in Summer 2002. This will be a joint project by
DDN and the Cordillera IT Connections (www.citcon.ph), organizers of the
Cordillera IT Congress. This Boot Camp is to be a comprehensive and
intensive Linux training that is open to all interested participants.
