xen's Tip-of-the-Day: Updates on getting Mozilla to Java (March 8, 2002)
========================================================================

Ariel Betan, my boss at UP Manila, wrote me to share that he found
some alternatives to the entry I wrote that you're supposed to add to
your apt sources.list in order to get blackdown's j2re1.3 package.

The original entry was:

        deb ftp://ftp.tux.org/pub/java/debian woody non-free

Ariel discovered that you can also use:

        deb http://www.tux.org/pub/java/debian potato non-free
or
        deb http://www.tux.org/pub/java/debian woody non-free

The latter URLs take advantage of any http proxies defined in your
environment.[1] So they are therefore the recommended entries to use.

You should put potato or woody depending on what release of Debian you
are using. Note that the links actually point to the same binaries.

If you want to do it the hard way, that is, without using apt-get, you can
download the .deb binaries from the following URL base using your
preferred browser or downloader, then use 'dpkg -i packagename.deb' to
install.

        http://www.tux.org/pub/java/debian/dists/woody/non-free/binary-i386/

There are a number of other Java packages available from there as
well, but those are beyond the scope of this article. Maybe when I
start writing Java, I'll be able to write about those as well.

Happy hacking!

[1] In case you haven't set any http or ftp proxies in your
environment yet, you can set them using:

        export http_proxy='http://proxy.name.or.ip:3128/'
        export ftp_proxy=$http_proxy

I'm assuming that you're using bash as your shell here. You can
likewise put these lines in your .bash_profile or .bashrc as suits
your taste.
