GnuCash which was just recommended by Jimmy is a pretty neat GUI
accounting program geared towards helping handle personal finances.
Support for an SQL server backend has been added lately. I do not know how
mainstream this support is, though.

Alternatively you may want to check out SQL-Ledger
<http://www.sql-ledger.com>, which is web-based and uses a PostgreSQL
backend. SQL-Ledger is designed towards helping handle business finances,
and can even handle multiple companies in one installation.
