Ugh, I missed the part where you said "irregardless of desktop used". 
Of course, the GNOME settings are as applicable to KDE.  I just realized
that fully, my slow aching mind... :P

Anyway, I'm still working on it.  I tried using your script as well, but
so far, it still doesn't work.  I'll post again once I get this fully
solved.

MC can do that eh?  I'm using gentoo right now (the Konqueror file
browser is quite heavy on memory/CPU usage, it seems), maybe it can
browse packages as well.
