Looks like this is detailed at the bottom of http://www.oneeyedcrow.net/tech/securex.html In general, it's much better to turn off vulnerable network services than to leave the problem in place but papered over with firewall rulesets. The approach at the hyperlink cited cures the problem at its source. I never knew kdm had that nasty habit, by the way. So, I've learned something from this thread.
